Vinaykant Kripashankar Udasi lived in a village in Gujarat. He had written many melodious bhajans of Thakur, among which the most popular is— “Kripa karo to hamaro Hara, nehi karo to hamaro Hara”. Vinaykant was literally a man mad for God. His spirituality was not limited to any vague idea; he wanted to see God in a physical human form. Whenever he saw a sadhu or monk on the street, he would run to them and ask, “Where can I go to see God in person?”

Finally, seeing his stubborn determination, one sadhu blessed him and assured him that he would indeed get to see God one day. Thrilled by this promise, Vinaykant started searching for God with deep devotion. But when nothing happened even after a few months, he became disappointed and locked himself in his room. Later, he realized that he would never find God by sitting at home. So, he took up the job of selling ayurvedic oil. He thought this business would give him an excuse to travel from village to village and search for his beloved God. But when that also brought no results, in desperation, he caught a train to Bombay (Mumbai) one day.

2. Unexpected Direction in a Bombay Lock-up

One day, the police caught him selling oil without a license on the streets of Bombay and put him in the lock-up. A little later, when the police inspector came and told him about his illegal work, tears started rolling down Vinaykant’s eyes. He said in a crying voice, “Sir, I truly didn’t know all this. I don’t sell oil to become rich; I am only searching for my God”. Then he told the inspector the whole story of the sadhu’s prediction and his search for God.

That police inspector was none other than Bombay’s first Thakur devotee, Sri Vittaldas Nathabhai Mehta. Seeing Vinaykant’s desperation, he was deeply moved. He took him to his house and said, “Your God is currently in Puri. I will arrange everything for your journey, but you have to do one thing for me. I bought a small gift for Him, but since my leave was not approved, I cannot go. Please hand over this gift to Him on my behalf”. Vinaykant agreed without a second thought.

3. The Miraculous Voice and the Beginning of the Tests

The next day, Mr. Mehta put him on a train to Puri. After a long four-day journey, Vinaykant reached Puri only to see that the ashram was completely deserted. Sri Tahal Prasad Ray (Tahal Baba) was locking the main gate of the ashram at that exact moment. As soon as Vinaykant ran to him and mentioned Mr. Mehta, Tahal Baba said, “You are a little late. Your God just left for Sonamukhi yesterday!”

Broken by disappointment, Vinaykant wanted to rush to Sonamukhi right then and there. But Tahal Baba comforted him and told him to rest in the ashram for a few days and then meet him in Cuttack. He promised to make all the arrangements for his trip to Sonamukhi. Saying this, he handed over the keys of the ashram to Vinaykant.

After eating his dinner at night, Vinaykant laid out his bed on the floor. But he couldn’t sleep at all. Suddenly, he saw images of various gods and goddesses floating across the ceiling one after another like a slide show. Sometimes, the face of an old, bearded man also appeared. Thinking the place was haunted by ghosts, he grabbed his bed in fear, ran out of the ashram, and headed towards the beach.

Suddenly, a deep voice boomed from thin air— “You want to see God, and you also want to sleep peacefully! Go, bring your bedding here”. Trembling with fear, Vinaykant went back to the ashram, brought his bedding to the beach, and was about to lay it on the sand. Immediately, the divine voice roared again— “What do you think you are doing? On one hand, you want to see God, and on the other, you are making arrangements for a peaceful sleep! What a shame! Go, throw the bed into the sea”. Thinking he was possessed by a ghost, Vinaykant hesitated a bit, but the voice threatened, “If you don’t listen to me, I will break your neck”. Fearing for his life, Vinaykant threw the bed into the sea!

4. The Leela of Pagal Haranath

After sitting on the beach all night, the voice ordered him to take a bath in the sea at dawn. Then, he was told to draw water from the well and pluck flowers from the garden. What a miracle! As soon as he touched the well’s bucket, he heard— “Pagal Haranath”. When the bucket touched the water, the sound came again— “Pagal Haranath”. While pulling the water, every splash, and even every touch while plucking flowers, played only one sound— “Pagal Haranath, Pagal Haranath”.

Then, the voice ordered him to open the locked room in front of the ashram. When he objected to opening the room without Tahal Baba’s permission, the voice scolded him again. Forced to open the door, he saw a beautiful photograph of Sri Kusum Haranath! The voice said, “This is your God. Go and worship Him with the flowers”.

For the next three days, following the instructions of that voice, Vinaykant visited all the holy places in Puri and the Jagannath Temple without eating or sleeping. Then came the command to go to Cuttack, but with a condition— if he told anyone about this voice, his neck would be broken! When he met Tahal Baba in Cuttack, Baba gave him directions to Sonamukhi and put him on a train from Howrah to Panagarh.

5. Giving Up Everything

As soon as Vinaykant sat on the train and breathed a sigh of relief, the voice started again. Horrifying scenes began to flash before his eyes. Then came a strange order— “Take off your jacket and throw it out the window”. Vinaykant protested, saying that his tickets and all his money were in the jacket’s pocket! But the voice shouted, “If you don’t throw it, I will throw you out the window”. Left with no choice, Vinaykant shocked his fellow passengers and threw his jacket out.

When he got down at Howrah, he was completely penniless and without a ticket. What would happen now? As ordered by the voice, he started following a coolie (porter) ahead of him and told him that he had lost everything but desperately needed to go to Panagarh. Surprisingly, the unknown coolie bought a ticket for him with his own money and seated him on the train to Panagarh!

6. The Ultimate Test in the Storm and Divine Joy

It was night by the time he reached Panagarh. The station master gave him shelter in the railway godown and arranged some food for him. Outside, it was raining heavily with massive thunderstorms. The moment the person left the food and Vinaykant was about to eat, the voice spoke again— “Look outside, what a beautiful opportunity to see your God!” Vinaykant desperately said, “It is pitch dark and raining heavily outside, where will I go in this? Let me eat first”. But the voice refused to listen— “Your God is waiting for you, and you are stuck on food? Get up and head out”.

Leaving his food behind, he walked out into the pitch darkness and heavy rain. After walking for a while, he realized he had stepped into a flowing stream of water. The water kept rising and reached his knees. The voice ordered him to throw away his wet shirt and vest. When the water reached his waist, the order came to throw away his dhoti as well. “You can’t even give up a simple dhoti, and you want to see God?”— hearing this, Vinaykant threw away his very last piece of clothing.

The water was now up to his neck. The voice mocked him, “Feeling very miserable, aren’t you?” Vinaykant replied, “I am beyond happiness and sorrow now. Just tell me what I need to do next”. The voice told him to climb a big tree nearby. After he climbed it, the voice asked, “Can you hear anything?” Vinaykant said, “Nothing except the sound of rain and strong winds”. The voice said, “Listen closely, your Krishna is playing His flute and calling you”.

In an instant, an incredible, heavenly melody of a flute entered Vinaykant’s ears! All the physical and mental pain of the last few days was washed away in a second. Sitting on the branch of that tree all night, he remained immersed in an unearthly, divine joy listening to the flute.

7. Reunion at Sonamukhi and a Strange Prayer

At dawn, seeing a boat far away, Vinaykant called out to the boatman. Seeing a completely naked man sitting on a tree, the boatman came closer, gave him a dhoti, and took him towards Sonamukhi (Rangamati Ghat).

As he reached Rangamati Ghat, he saw an old man holding a walking stick standing there. Seeing him, the old man called out, “Come, come Vinaykant. I was waiting just for you!” Vinaykant was amazed, wondering how anyone could know his name in this unknown place. The old man took him to a village, arranged some food for him, and then brought him to ‘Kusum Kunj’ in Sonamukhi.

Near the ashram’s gate, the old man pointed to a room inside and said, “Your God lives in that room. You go ahead”. Mad with joy, Vinaykant was about to run but turned back to thank the old man. To his shock, there was no one there!

Confused, he stepped into the courtyard, and there he saw the exact same bearded old man standing right in front of him with open arms and a sweet smile on His face! He called out, “Oh Vinaykant… I have been waiting for you all this time!”

Vinaykant ran and fell at His feet, crying loudly. Thakur picked him up and hugged him tightly to His chest. After a while, Thakur asked, “Now that you have found your God, won’t you ask Him for something?”

Floating in tears, devotee Vinaykant said, “After getting You, what else is left to ask for? But if You really want to give me something, please grant me this wish that I never see You as God ever again… Promise me that in every birth, You will only be my loving father or a dear friend. That ‘God’ form of Yours is too cruel. Please never show me that form again!”
