A Chronological Account of Sri Haranath’s Playful Mercy (March 1913)

In the early days of March 1913, as the gentle spring breeze began to sweep across Bengal, a heavy cloud of sorrow settled over the mind of Narayan Chandra Ghosh, a prominent advocate from Nandabagan, Calcutta. The source of his melancholy was a sweet yet agonizing invitation. His beloved ‘mad saint,’ Thakur Haranath, was traveling to Vrindavan to celebrate the grand inauguration of Sri Haranath Ashram, and he had affectionately invited Narayan Babu to accompany him as his traveling companion.

However, circumstances were extremely difficult. Narayan Babu was going through a period of severe financial distress, leaving him without even the modest sum required to purchase a train ticket. As the departure date drew closer, the painful conflict between his intense longing to go to Vrindavan with Thakur and his absolute empty pocket plunged him into deep despair.

He could not sleep a wink on the night before the scheduled departure. The next morning, as he sat on the veranda with an exceptionally gloomy and pale face, his devoted wife approached him. Seeing his state, she asked with deep concern:

“Why have you been looking so extremely worried and sad for the last few days? What is bothering you so deeply? Please, share your burden with me.”

Reluctantly, Narayan Babu opened his heart, explaining Thakur’s invitation and his absolute financial inability to undertake the journey. Upon hearing his plight, his wife smiled gently. She went inside and returned with a small, carefully guarded cloth bundle containing her personal savings. With deep affection, she placed twenty rupees—a magnificent sum in those days—into his hands. As she bade him farewell, she placed her hand upon his head and made a soft, tearful request:

“Since you are traveling to the sacred land of Braja, you must not forget to bring back a sweet, beautiful Gopal deity for me. I wish to serve Him in our home.”

With overwhelming joy and tears of gratitude, Narayan Babu quickly packed his belongings and hastened toward the railway station.

The Sweet Surprise at Gaya Station

As Narayan Babu boarded the train, his mind was completely absorbed in contemplation of Thakur. Little did he realize that the omniscient Thakur Haranath already knew of his silent struggle and subsequent departure. In fact, Thakur had been waiting patiently at Gaya station since the previous day, purely to welcome Narayan Babu!

When the train steamed into Gaya station, Narayan Babu looked out of the window and was utterly dumbfounded. Standing prominently on the platform was none other than Thakur Haranath himself! The moment Thakur spotted Narayan Babu, his face lit up with a divine glow. He extended his arms, boarded the train’s inter-class compartment, and embraced him with profound emotion, exclaiming:

“Dada, you have actually come! I cannot begin to describe the immense joy your presence brings to my heart!”

Thakur sat beside him on the wooden bench of that modest compartment. They were accompanied by Radhaballav Seal, a highly devoted disciple, and a few other close followers. Throughout the night, keeping perfect rhythm with the monotonous clattering of the train’s wheels, an unceasing stream of Thakur’s nectar-like words and laughter filled the compartment. In that ecstatic atmosphere of spiritual communion, Narayan Babu felt as though he had been transported to a purely celestial realm.

The Wave of Vrindavan Celebrations and Forgetfulness

Upon arriving in Vrindavan, the travelers were greeted by grand, bustling festivities. Thakur’s highly beloved disciple, Atal Bihari Nandi (affectionately addressed by Thakur as the ‘Advaita Acharya’ of his divine play), had meticulously organized and supervised the grand inauguration of the new ashram.

Surrounded by thousands of ecstatic devotees, swept away by the thunderous chants of Harinam Sankirtan, and completely bathed in the infinite ocean of love radiating from Thakur’s physical presence, Narayan Babu lost all track of time and space. He completely forgot about his domestic worries back in Calcutta, and most unfortunately, he completely forgot his wife’s earnest and tearful parting request: to bring back a Gopal deity.

A Sudden Realization and the Playful Companion

The glorious festival came to a close, and the day of departure arrived. Just two or three hours before they were scheduled to board the train back to Calcutta, a sudden memory struck Narayan Babu’s mind like a bolt of lightning! He remembered his wife’s parting words and the twenty rupees she had so lovingly handed him, solely for the purpose of bringing Gopal home.

With only a couple of hours remaining and no knowledge of the local markets or streets of Vrindavan, a wave of intense anxiety and helplessness washed over him. In a state of sheer panic, he rushed out of the ashram onto the dusty streets, desperately looking for a guide. As he stood bewildered, wondering which way to go, Thakur’s close companion Radhaballav Seal suddenly materialized before him, as if out of thin air!

Radhaballav Babu asked with a warm, comforting smile, “What is the matter, Dada? Why do you look so restless and where are you heading in such a rush?”

Narayan Babu clung to him like a drowning man clutching a straw. He quickly and anxiously narrated his predicament. Radhaballav Seal laughed hearteningly and reassured him, “Oh, Dada, is that all? Why worry so much for such a trivial matter? Come with me. I know a wonderful shopkeeper nearby who sells the most exquisite deities. He is a close acquaintance of mine.”

Radhaballav Babu guided him through the narrow, winding alleys of Vrindavan, walking for nearly a mile and a half until they reached a small shop of brass deities. The shopkeeper welcomed Radhaballav Babu with immense respect and warmth. Radhaballav Babu personally picked up and examined several Gopal deities, turning them around under the light. Finally, he selected an exceptionally beautiful and enchanting Gopal, placing Him in Narayan Babu’s hands with these words: “Dada, look closely at this Gopal. See the beauty of His eyes and the sweetness of His vubhan-mohana (world-enchanting) smile! This is the perfect one for your home.”

The moment Narayan Babu held the little deity, a wave of deep peace and satisfaction washed over his troubled soul. He accepted Him instantly. Reflecting on this divine encounter years later, Narayan Babu wrote:

“Who actually paid the price of Gopal that day—whether it was Radhaballav or me—I cannot remember today. But this much I know with absolute certainty: the Gopal who resides in our home is priceless. No wealth of this earth could ever purchase Him.”

With Gopal safely wrapped and placed in his pocket, a deeply satisfied Narayan Babu boarded the train and returned to Calcutta.

The Miraculous Revelation of the Disguised Saint

For several years after returning to Calcutta, Narayan Babu remained under the firm belief that his kind well-wisher, Radhaballav Seal, had saved him from immense embarrassment by navigating the complex streets of Vrindavan to secure the Gopal deity.

However, the truth is magnificent, and the divine has its own extraordinary ways of revealing itself. Years later, through a letter from another close devotee and during an intimate spiritual gathering, Narayan Babu happened to bring up that memorable incident in Vrindavan in front of Radhaballav Seal himself. He began to express his deep, heartfelt gratitude to him for that timely help.

Radhaballav Seal listened to the story with absolute bewilderment and shock. He looked at Narayan Babu with wide, honest eyes and exclaimed:

“Dada, what in the world are you talking about? No such incident ever occurred between us in Vrindavan! I never accompanied you to any shop, nor did I select any Gopal deity for you! I have absolutely no memory of this. You must be mistaken!”

Hearing Radhaballav’s sincere and absolute denial, a cold thrill of realization ran through Narayan Babu’s entire body. Tears of divine ecstasy and love gushed from his eyes. In a flash of spiritual clarity, all his misconceptions were shattered. He realized the sublime truth: on that hot, dusty afternoon in Vrindavan, it was none other than his beloved **Thakur Haranath who had taken the disguise of Radhaballav Seal** to protect the honor and fulfill the desire of his helpless devotee!

It was Thakur himself who, through his infinite, playful mercy, had personally chosen and delivered Himself into the devotee’s home in the form of ‘Gopal.’ This Gopal was no mere metal idol; He was the living, breathing essence of Thakur Haranath, who had come down from the eternal bower of Braja to reside, play, and bless the household of his beloved devotee as a living child.
