In the early twentieth century, Calcutta was buzzing with the intellectual currents of Western education and scientific skepticism. Under the influence of Christian missionary schooling, the young and educated Bengali elite began to distance themselves from traditional Hindu scriptures and ritualistic worship. Narayan Chandra Ghosh, a prominent advocate from a respectable family, was no exception to this trend. To his highly rationalistic mind, God, if He existed at all, was far too detached to concern Himself with the mundane joys and sorrows of human beings.

Despite this apparent indifference, an inexplicable spiritual restlessness lingered deep within Narayan Babu’s heart. It was not out of genuine devotion but rather a sharp, intellectual curiosity that he began visiting the most celebrated spiritual figures of his era. He had sat in the presence of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda, Brahmananda Keshab Chandra Sen, Bholananda Giri, and the wandering ascetic Krishnaprasanna Sen. While he deeply respected their vast wisdom and saintly presence, none of them could soften his skeptic, stony heart, nor did any of them claim him as their own disciple.

Yet, destiny had already orchestrated a supreme sanctuary for him. In the year 1907 or 1908, drawn by some mysterious pull, Narayan Babu traveled to Sonamukhi to meet the ‘mad saint,’ Thakur Haranath.

The moment his eyes fell upon Thakur Haranath, a profound psychological shift occurred. Looking at that radiant, compassionate, and infinitely loving face, Narayan Babu felt a sudden, powerful tremor in his heart. It was a sensation of absolute, undeniable familiarity—as if a beloved face from some ancient, forgotten lifetime had suddenly emerged, brushing away the dust of centuries.

Overwhelmed and discarding all formal hesitations, Narayan Babu looked straight into Thakur’s eyes and asked directly: “Thakur, why does your face look so wonderfully familiar to me?”

Thakur Haranath let out his signature, world-enchanting laugh—a smile that seemed to blend the warmth of a million suns. He looked deeply into Narayan’s eyes and replied in his wonderfully sweet, mysterious voice:

“Dada (brother), why shouldn’t it feel familiar? Is our acquaintance only of today? We are not newly introduced; we have been walking together, holding hands, through ages and lifetimes.”

This sweet and extraordinarily profound declaration pierced the very core of Narayan Babu’s being. While he might not have fully grasped the cosmic magnitude or the transcendental depth of Thakur’s words at that exact moment, he felt a wave of peace wash over him. He realized that he had never heard such nectar-like words in his life. Without any display of yogic powers or miraculous showmanship, Thakur Haranath had captured him forever, solely with the net of divine love.

This first meeting marked the turning point of Narayan Babu’s life. From that auspicious day onward, amid the endless trials of his professional advocacy and domestic duties, an irresistible spiritual force continuously drew him closer to Thakur. He came to realize that the ‘mad saint’ of Sonamukhi was no ordinary human being, but the ocean of unconditional love incarnate, who had descended into this mortal world to hold his devotees by the hand.
