After passing the Entrance Examination from Kuchia-Kol School in 1885 and the F.A. examination from Burdwan Raj College in 1887, Thakur Haranath joined the famous Metropolitan College in Kolkata to study for his B.A. At that time, he lived in mess houses at Chorbagan Lane and Baranasi Ghosh Street in Kolkata.
From the very beginning of his stay in Kolkata, Thakur Haranath became deeply indifferent to worldly matters and formal studies. He had no interest in studies, food, dress, or even spending time with his friends. His mind was always restless with a deep spiritual longing. One day, Khudiram suddenly saw Thakur Haranath in a state of deep trance inside the mess room. To an ordinary person, it might have appeared like fainting or a sudden loss of consciousness.
But Khudiram had a deep spiritual understanding. He immediately realized that this was not physical weakness or illness. He understood that it was a state of great spiritual bliss arising from communion with the Supreme. Such a sight was beyond the experience of ordinary people. After witnessing this extraordinary state, Khudiram developed immense devotion and reverence for Thakur Haranath. He silently made up his mind that he would spend the rest of his life in the holy company of this great soul.
In due course, Khudiram Das passed the B.L. examination with distinction. Even after becoming a B.L., he did not enter the legal profession. There were practical reasons for this. But later, when he came to know that his beloved friend Haranath was teaching mathematics at a small school in Ayodhya, Bankura, his longing to be near Thakur became so intense that he could no longer control himself.
In a great example of renunciation, Khudiram immediately resigned from his well-known government school and gave up the position of Headmaster, along with his large salary. With great humility and without the slightest sense of pride, he went to the Ayodhya school and joined as an ordinary Assistant Teacher on a much smaller salary—simply because he longed to remain near Thakur Haranath.
When Thakur saw that a highly educated B.L. graduate had given up his position as Headmaster and come to the school simply out of love for him, his heart was filled with affection. Thakur immediately spoke to the school authorities about Khudiram’s great knowledge and ability. Through Thakur’s sincere efforts and intervention, the authorities of Ayodhya School were delighted to recognize Khudiram’s worth. When the news reached Sonamukhi that Thakur Haranath was so indifferent to his studies in Kolkata and spent so much time absorbed in deep meditation, his mother, Bhagabati Devi, became deeply worried. She feared that her only son might renounce worldly life and become a monk forever.
When Mother Bhagabati Devi requested Haranath to concentrate on his studies and pass his examinations, Thakur respectfully bowed at his mother’s holy feet, smiled gently, and revealed a profound truth.

কলকাতায় পড়াশোনার প্রতি ঠাকুরের এই উদাসীনতা ও গভীর ধ্যানে ডুবে থাকার কথা যখন সোনামুখীতে তাঁর মা ভগবতী দেবীর কানে পৌঁছাল, তখন মায়ের মন পরম আশঙ্কায় কেঁপে উঠল। মা ভাবলেন, তাঁর একমাত্র সন্তান হয়তো সংসার ত্যাগ করে চিরদিনের মতো সন্ন্যাসী হয়ে যাবে।
