Mid-1913 • Nandanbagan, Calcutta

Returning from the divine, ecstatic celebrations of Vrindavan with the living Gopal tucked safely in his pocket, the advocate Narayan Chandra Ghosh reached his family residence at Nandanbagan (168, Upper Circular Road), Calcutta. However, owing to the strong influence of his English education, his mind was still dominated by rational skepticism rather than deep, devotional surrender. Thus, upon arriving home, instead of treating the deity as a sacred, living form, he regarded Him as a mere beautiful brass doll. He placed Gopal in a glass showcase in his bedroom, crowded alongside other regular children’s toys, and practically forgot about Him.

But Gopal had not come to Narayan Babu’s house to remain confined as an inert doll in a glass cabinet. He had descended to enact His divine, childlike plays (Leelas) and to lovingly demand His daily service (Sheba) from the hands of His devotee!

Shortly after Gopal was placed in the cabinet, a strange and inexplicable series of events began unfolding in Narayan Babu’s bedroom.

Every night, Narayan Babu’s wife would carefully set aside some sweets in the bedroom for their two infant sons—Jagannath (Jagan) and Madhab (Madhai), who were then only between two and four years old—so they could have them as their morning tiffin. However, to the utter bewilderment of the parents, those sweets began disappearing regularly every single night!

Initially, Narayan Babu and his wife assumed it was the work of household mice or cats. To prevent any further theft, from the next evening, they began covering the sweet bowls meticulously with heavy brass covers and plates. Yet, it was of no avail.

After a day or two of pause, they would again find the bowl completely empty on the third or fourth morning! With no openings or cracks in the bedroom walls, the mystery of how the sweets vanished in a locked room remained entirely unsolved, leaving Narayan Babu and his wife in deep perplexity.

While this mystery of the missing treats kept the entire household puzzled, a relative happened to visit their house one afternoon. Walking into the bedroom, his eyes caught the glass showcase, and he stopped in sheer awe. Looking closely at the divine image of Gopal, he exclaimed with immense emotion:

“Oh! What an extraordinarily beautiful Gopal you have obtained! Where did you find such a wonderful deity? And how do you perform His daily service and worship?” This sudden question left Narayan Babu deeply embarrassed and ashamed. He replied in a soft, sheepish voice:

“I brought Him from Vrindavan, yes, but I do not perform any service or worship for Him. Ever since I brought Him, He has just been lying there inside the showcase like a doll.”

The relative said nothing more. But after his departure, a deep sense of guilt and intense remorse began to stir within Narayan Babu’s heart. Born into an aristocratic Vaishnava family, the latent spiritual impressions passed down by his pious, devout parents suddenly shook his inner consciousness. He felt a profound pang of conscience—how terribly wrong and disrespectful it was to bring the divine Gopal from a sacred land like Vrindavan only to lock Him away in a glass cabinet among ordinary toys!

Since Narayan Babu had received initiation (Diksha) from his family guru only a few months prior, he resolved to make amends starting the very next morning. With deep love and reverence, he carefully removed Gopal from the glass showcase, liberating Him forever from the company of ordinary toys. He created a dedicated, separate niche on the wall of his bedroom and established Gopal there as the sole master of the room.

From that day forward, whenever Narayan Babu sat down for his daily prayers and morning worship, he would sprinkle holy Ganges water and offer some fresh, sweet treats with utmost devotion before Gopal.

Thus, even while patiently enduring His devotee’s initial neglect, the living Gopal liberated Himself from the glass cabinet through the sweet, mystical play of His missing treats, establishing His royal daily worship in the heart of Narayan Babu’s home.
