[As told by Smt. P. Dhanalakshmi (3rd and youngest daughter of Sri Polisetty Ramdas) & recollections from the information given by Late Smt. V. Kalidevi (eldest daughter of Sri Polisetty Ramdas) to her grandson V. Srinivas]
Shri. Polisetty Ramdas was an ardent devotee of the Lord of the universe Kusuma Haranath Baba. He played a pivotal role in constructing the temple of Lord Sri Kusuma Haranath in Bhadrachalam.
The story thus goes that P. Ramdas was disillusioned with the materialistic aspects of life and wanted to renounce material life at a very young age. Without letting anybody know he left for Pandharpur to embrace a new spiritual identity by mixing with the ascetics there. The father of P. Ramdas was a very worried man, since not only was he his only son, but their last 3 generations only had one son in their lineage. At that point in time, he had heard about Haranath Baba and prayed to him fervently that if He indeed is God, as claimed by many, then He should make his only son change his mind and return home. Then by a miraculous change of mind, the young Ramdas returned home immediately. The fathers joy knew no bounds and thus the seed of Haranath Bhakti sprouted in the household.
Soon the young Ramdas became deeply engrossed in Kusum Haranath Bhakti and his married life began in right earnest. He secured a job as a Gumastha in the Registrar department of Taluka Office at Bhadrachalam (erstwhile Madras Presidency, then part of Andhra Pradesh and currently in Telangana). His eldest daughter Kail Devi who was the spiritual torch bearer of Haranath Bhakti and then his son Hara Gopal were born. One particular incident fortified his Bhakti towards the universal Lord in a significant fashion. When Hara Gopal was 8-9 months old, he happened to crawl unattended towards a well situated in the compound of the house and fall into it accidentally. When the panic-stricken wife of Ramdas, Smt. Kamala Devi realized what had just happened, she called for help frantically. A passing policeman upon hearing the screams of the hapless mother came running and so did others in the vicinity. Kamala Devi was dumbstruck and thought she had lost her only son, since much time passed before rescue efforts had even begun. The news reached Ramdas, who came running from his office. By the time the young infant was brought up, everybody was worried and expected the worst. Ramdas kept praying to Haranath Baba in his heart that if the young boy survived, he would name him after Haranath Baba. Lo Behold! To everyone’s astonishment the young infant not only survived but opened his eyes immediately. This left an immutable mark of Bhakti in the mind & heart of Ramdas and thus he named his young boy Hara Gopal.
After this incident, it occurred to Ramdas that a temple of Kusuma Haranath Baba should be built in Bhadrachalam. However, since he was only a government servant and not much means were at his disposal, he did not stand much chance. However, the Bhakti of Ramdas did not falter before the realities of time. He petitioned the collector for allocation of land for the temple. The collector allocated land on a hillock near to the temple of Lord Sri Ram. It was a herculean task to build a temple since it was a barren hillock full of rocks. Ramdas persisted and sent his wife Kamala Devi to nearby villages and seek donations for the construction of the temple. Kamala Devi went from village to village and door to door of the bhaktas of Kusuma Haranath Baba. 14 lakhs of rupees during the period were collected through donations. There was one major problem though! There were houses at the bottom of the hillock and the rocks that would be blasted would eventually roll down and fall on the houses of these inhabitants, injuring or worst killing them. All the house dwellers vehemently opposed Ramdas on this. Ramdas found a unique solution to this problem which was steeped in Bhakti and devotion towards his Lord. Whenever the rocks were blasted, big boulders that came gushing down the hill stopped the very moment Ramdas used to chant Kusuma Hara, Kusuma Hara loudly! This way these rocky boulders were prevented from falling on the houses below. Such was the faith he had in the Lords Name! Since, there was no electricity, petromax lights were used and water was carried all the way from Godavari River to the construction site up the hillock on shoulder carrying poles (kawads). Thus, slowly and steadily the temple was built brick by brick and with overpouring of love and donations by Bhaktas of the Lord.
After the temple was built, Ramdas initiated the ritual of daily Annadanam at the temple. He made it very clear that no one who came to the temple should go away hungry at any point in time. During the trial that she faced when her son had fallen in the well, Kamala Devi had promised to give away all ornaments that were on her self to the service of the Lord. Ramdas made sure that Kamala Devi donated all her ornaments to the service of Annadanam. There was an iron box which contained all the money received from the donors for Annadanam. This iron box was always overflowing with Dhanam (money), hence when the 3rd and youngest daughter of Ramdas was born, he named her Dhanalakshmi. It is to be known that whenever anybody offered anything to Ramdas, he used to politely decline the same and told them if they wish, they could contribute anything towards the temple. This way there was no dearth of money or items during the temple construction period or thereafter for running the temple affairs. Annadanam continued for a period of 12 years unabated from the time of inception of the temple.
Nobody knows how & why the Lord chose to stand here, but we all know that nothing happens without His Sankalpa. The temple overlooks the mighty Sri Ram temple and the majestic Godavari River and is currently under the jurisdiction of the endowments department of Telangana state. In one incident, wherein upon questioned by someone as to whether Kusuma Haranath Baba is a God or if He exists, small footsteps seemingly made by the naughty Krishna all the way across the floor of the temple leading to the sanctum sanctorum lay imprinted to this day for all to see and experience His Grace!

ভদ্রাচলম কুসুম হরনাথ মন্দিরের ইতিহাস

শ্রী পোলিসেট্টি রামাদাস ছিলেন জগতপতি কুসুমহরনাথ বাবার একনিষ্ঠ ভক্ত। ভদ্রাচলমে ভগবান শ্রী কুসুমহরনাথের মন্দির নির্মাণে তিনি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করেছিলেন।
ঘটনাটি হলো, শ্রী রামাদাস খুব অল্প বয়সেই জাগতিক জীবনের প্রতি বীতশ্রদ্ধ হয়ে পড়েন এবং পার্থিব জীবন ত্যাগ করতে চান। কাউকে কিছু না জানিয়ে তিনি পন্ধরপুরে চলে যান, যাতে সেখানকার সাধু-সন্ন্যাসীদের সাথে মিশে এক নতুন আধ্যাত্মিক জীবন গ্রহণ করতে পারেন। তাঁর বাবা এতে ভীষণ চিন্তায় পড়েছিলেন, কারণ রামাদাস কেবল তাঁর একমাত্র সন্তানই ছিলেন না, তাঁদের বংশের গত তিন প্রজন্মে তিনিই ছিলেন একমাত্র পুত্রসন্তান। সেই সময় তিনি হরনাথ বাবার কথা শুনেছিলেন এবং তাঁর কাছে একান্তভাবে প্রার্থনা করেছিলেন যে, অনেকে যেমন বলে তিনি যদি সত্যিই ভগবান হয়ে থাকেন, তবে তিনি যেন তাঁর একমাত্র ছেলের মত পরিবর্তন করে তাকে বাড়ি ফিরিয়ে আনেন। এরপর এক অলৌকিক মন পরিবর্তনের মাধ্যমে যুবক রামাদাস অবিলম্বে বাড়ি ফিরে আসেন। বাবার আনন্দের আর সীমা রইল না, আর এভাবেই সেই পরিবারে হরনাথ-ভক্তির বীজ অঙ্কুরিত হয়েছিল।
শীঘ্রই যুবক রামাদাস কুসুমহরনাথের ভক্তিতে গভীরভাবে নিমগ্ন হন এবং তাঁর বিবাহিত জীবন সঠিকভাবে শুরু হয়। ভদ্রাচলমের (তৎকালীন মাদ্রাজ প্রেসিডেন্সি, পরে অন্ধ্রপ্রদেশ এবং বর্তমানে তেলেঙ্গানার অংশ) তালুকা অফিসের রেজিস্ট্রার বিভাগে তিনি ‘গোমস্তা’ হিসেবে চাকরি পান। এরপর তাঁর জ্যেষ্ঠ কন্যা কালীদেবী জন্মগ্রহণ করেন, যিনি ছিলেন হরনাথ ভক্তির এক আধ্যাত্মিক মশালবাহী; এবং পরবর্তীতে তাঁর পুত্র হরগোপালের জন্ম হয়। একটি বিশেষ ঘটনা ভগবানের প্রতি তাঁর ভক্তিকে আরও গভীরভাবে সুদৃঢ় করেছিল। হরগোপালের বয়স তখন ৮-৯ মাস, একদিন সে হামাগুড়ি দিতে দিতে বাড়ির প্রাঙ্গণে থাকা একটি কুয়োর দিকে চলে যায় এবং দুর্ঘটনাবশত তার ভেতরে পড়ে যায়। রামাদাসের স্ত্রী, শ্রীমতী কমলাদেবী যখন বুঝতে পারেন কী ঘটে গেছে, তখন তিনি আতঙ্কে চিৎকার করে সাহায্য চাইতে থাকেন। সেই অসহায় মায়ের আর্তনাদ শুনে পথচলতি এক পুলিশকর্মী ছুটে আসেন এবং আশেপাশের অন্যরাও ছুটে আসেন। কমলাদেবী একেবারে হতবাক হয়ে গিয়েছিলেন, তিনি ভেবেছিলেন তাঁর একমাত্র ছেলেকে হয়তো তিনি হারিয়ে ফেলেছেন, কারণ উদ্ধারকাজ শুরু হওয়ার আগেই অনেকটা সময় পেরিয়ে গিয়েছিল। খবর পেয়ে রামাদাস তাঁর অফিস থেকে ছুটে আসেন। যখন শিশুটিকে উপরে তুলে আনা হলো, ততক্ষণে সবাই খুব উদ্বিগ্ন এবং খারাপ কিছুরই আশঙ্কা করছিলেন। রামাদাস মনে মনে হরনাথ বাবার কাছে প্রার্থনা করছিলেন যে, যদি ছোট্ট ছেলেটি বেঁচে যায়, তবে তিনি তার নাম হরনাথ বাবার নামানুসারেই রাখবেন। কী আশ্চর্য! সবাইকে অবাক করে দিয়ে শিশুটি কেবল বেঁচেই ছিল না, তৎক্ষণাৎ চোখও মেলে তাকায়। এই ঘটনা রামাদাসের মন ও হৃদয়ে ভক্তির এক অমোঘ ছাপ ফেলেছিল এবং তাই তিনি তাঁর ছেলের নাম রাখেন ‘হরগোপাল’।
এই ঘটনার পর রামাদাসের মনে হয় যে ভদ্রাচলমে কুসুমহরনাথ বাবার একটি মন্দির নির্মাণ করা উচিত। কিন্তু যেহেতু তিনি একজন সাধারণ সরকারি কর্মচারী ছিলেন এবং তাঁর কাছে খুব বেশি অর্থ ছিল না, তাই মন্দির তৈরির সুযোগ প্রায় ছিল না বললেই চলে। তা সত্ত্বেও, সময়ের বাস্তবতার কাছে রামাদাসের ভক্তি টলে যায়নি। তিনি মন্দিরের জন্য জমি বরাদ্দের আবেদন জানিয়ে কালেক্টরের কাছে যান। কালেক্টর ভগবান শ্রী রামের মন্দিরের কাছে একটি পাহাড়ের ওপর জমি বরাদ্দ করেন। এটি ছিল পাথরে ভরা এক অনুর্বর পাহাড়, তাই সেখানে মন্দির নির্মাণ করা ছিল এক অসাধ্য সাধন। কিন্তু রামাদাস হাল ছাড়েননি, তিনি তাঁর স্ত্রী কমলাদেবীকে আশেপাশের গ্রামগুলোতে পাঠান মন্দির নির্মাণের জন্য অনুদান সংগ্রহ করতে। কমলাদেবী কুসুমহরনাথ বাবার ভক্তদের দ্বারে দ্বারে এবং এক গ্রাম থেকে অন্য গ্রামে ঘুরে বেড়ান। সেই সময়ে অনুদানের মাধ্যমে ১৪ লক্ষ টাকা সংগৃহীত হয়েছিল। তবে সেখানে একটি বড় সমস্যা ছিল! পাহাড়ের নিচে কিছু বাড়ি ছিল। পাথর ফাটালে বড় বড় পাথর গড়িয়ে নিচে থাকা বাড়িগুলোর ওপর পড়ার ভয় ছিল, যার ফলে সেখানকার বাসিন্দারা আহত বা নিহত হতে পারতেন। নিচের সব বাসিন্দারা তাই তীব্রভাবে রামাদাসকে বাধা দেন। রামাদাস এই সমস্যার একটি অনন্য সমাধান খুঁজে বের করেছিলেন, যা ছিল তাঁর প্রভুর প্রতি অগাধ ভক্তি ও বিশ্বাসে পরিপূর্ণ। যখনই পাথর ফাটানো হতো এবং বড় বড় পাথর পাহাড় থেকে গড়িয়ে নিচে নামতে শুরু করত, ঠিক সেই মুহূর্তে রামাদাস জোরে জোরে “কুসুম-হর, কুসুম-হর” বলে জপ করতে শুরু করতেন! আর আশ্চর্যের বিষয়, পাথরগুলো সেখানেই থেমে যেত এবং এভাবেই পাহাড়ের নিচে থাকা বাড়িগুলোর ওপর পাথর পড়া রোধ করা হয়েছিল। প্রভুর নামের প্রতি তাঁর এমনই বিশ্বাস ছিল! যেহেতু সেখানে কোনো বিদ্যুৎ ছিল না, তাই পেট্রোম্যাক্স লাইট ব্যবহার করা হতো এবং বাঁক (কাওয়াদ) কাঁধে করে গোদাবরী নদী থেকে জল বয়ে পাহাড়ের ওপর নির্মাণস্থলে নিয়ে যাওয়া হতো। এভাবেই ধীরে ধীরে, ইটের পর ইট গেঁথে এবং প্রভুর ভক্তদের উপচে পড়া ভালোবাসা ও অনুদানে মন্দিরটি নির্মিত হয়েছিল।
মন্দির নির্মাণের পর রামাদাস সেখানে প্রতিদিন ‘অন্নদান’-এর আচার শুরু করেন। তিনি স্পষ্টভাবে নির্দেশ দিয়েছিলেন যে, মন্দিরে আসা কোনো ব্যক্তি যেন কখনোই ক্ষুধার্ত অবস্থায় ফিরে না যান। যখন তাঁর ছেলে কুয়োয় পড়ে গিয়েছিল, সেই বিপদের সময় কমলাদেবী প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন যে তিনি তাঁর নিজের সমস্ত গয়না প্রভুর সেবায় দান করবেন। রামাদাস নিশ্চিত করেছিলেন যাতে কমলাদেবী তাঁর সেই প্রতিশ্রুতি মতো সমস্ত গয়না অন্নদানের সেবায় দান করেন। অনুদানকারীদের কাছ থেকে অন্নদানের জন্য প্রাপ্ত সমস্ত অর্থ রাখার একটি লোহার বাক্স ছিল। সেই বাক্সটি সর্বদা ‘ধন’ (অর্থ) দ্বারা উপচে পড়ত, তাই রামাদাসের তৃতীয় ও কনিষ্ঠ কন্যার জন্ম হলে তিনি তার নাম রাখেন ‘ধনলক্ষ্মী’। জানা যায় যে, কেউ রামাদাসকে কিছু দিতে চাইলে তিনি বিনীতভাবে তা প্রত্যাখ্যান করতেন এবং বলতেন যে তারা চাইলে মন্দিরের জন্য যেকোনো কিছু দান করতে পারেন। এর ফলে মন্দির নির্মাণকালে বা পরবর্তী সময়ে মন্দিরের কাজ পরিচালনার জন্য অর্থ বা কোনো জিনিসের অভাব হয়নি। মন্দিরের শুরু থেকে একটানা ১২ বছর ধরে এই অন্নদান কর্মসূচি অব্যাহত ছিল।
ভগবান কেন এবং কীভাবে এখানে বিরাজ করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিলেন তা কেউ জানে না, তবে আমরা সবাই জানি যে তাঁর সংকল্প ছাড়া কিছুই ঘটে না। এই মন্দির থেকে বিশাল শ্রীরাম মন্দির এবং মহিমাময় গোদাবরী নদী দেখা যায় এবং এটি বর্তমানে তেলেঙ্গানা রাজ্যের এন্ডাউমেন্টস বিভাগের এখতিয়ারে রয়েছে। একটি ঘটনার কথা শোনা যায়, যখন কেউ একজন প্রশ্ন করেছিলেন যে কুসুমহরনাথ বাবা সত্যিই ভগবান কি না বা তাঁর অস্তিত্ব আছে কি না, তখন দেখা যায় মন্দিরের মেঝে পেরিয়ে একেবারে গর্ভগৃহ পর্যন্ত ছোট্ট দুষ্টু কৃষ্ণের পায়ের ছাপ আঁকা রয়েছে, যা আজও সকলের দেখার ও তাঁর কৃপা অনুভব করার জন্য সেখানে বিদ্যমান!
যে সমস্ত ভক্তরা আজ পর্যন্ত প্রভুর এই পবিত্র আবাসটি নির্মাণ এবং রক্ষণাবেক্ষণে সাহায্য করেছেন, তাঁদের সকলের প্রতি জানাই প্রণাম ও বিনীত শ্রদ্ধা।
