Letter No. 2
To, Jatindranath Roy:
Krishna’s name is more powerful than Krishna Himself. Taken even without earnestness, it does not go for nothing. World is a temporary abode. Even if it is permanent, it is not so in regard to myself, because I cannot remain here forever. I am alive now, but the next moment I may not be so. Getting deluded that this transitory earthly home is a permanent possession, one should not lose sight of the abode of eternal peace. Enamoured by the worldly relation, we should not forget Krishna the true and constant Friend. Have faith and take shelter in Name with body, mind and soul.
He is a true friend whose presence stimulates conversation on Krishna. Worldly works must be done as a simple duty but you must love the Lord’s name with all your heart and soul. Serve the world with your body but offer your heart and soul to Krishna and remain peacefully in the ocean of bliss.
If you love the original cause of the universe, then you would have loved all beings and things. By pouring water at the root of a tree, its whole system is watered. Similarly by loving Krishna, the whole universe is loved. Hence Sastras say, “He who loves Krishna, is very circumspect.”
It is the duty of everyone to regard his mother as Krishna in flesh and blood. If that mother who conceived, called into existence, protected and nourished the body, should not be so regarded, then who should be? The Lord is conceiving, calling into existence, protecting and nourishing the universe. The mother is doing just the same in regard to this body. If I adore and worship the Lord in a certain form and slight the other forms, do I not commit a sinful act? In the same way, if I adore my mother but show disrespect to the mothers of others, I sow the seed of incalculable sin. Disregard should never be shown even to females of dogs and cats. There is nothing more divine than one’s own mother. All deities such as Indra, Chandra etc. are all centred in the mother’s body.
It is not right to lose all powers in this and the other world by looking upon wife as a plaything. She should be regarded as the principal companion in this and the other world, life after life. Take her qualities and in exchange give her yours. This process of giving and taking brings the two into closer proximity until the two are blended into one. Do not become a slave to unworthy worldly desires, thereby losing the everlasting happiness.
