The supreme treasure of devotees’ hearts, the saviour of the fallen, Sri Sri Haranath, had approached the final stage of His earthly pastimes. Responding tirelessly to the earnest calls of devotees from all over India, He had just returned to Sonamukhi after a long pilgrimage. His body was extremely exhausted; it seemed it could bear no more. In such a state, an invitation arrived from the eminent devotee of Howrah, Sri Prafulla Kumar Ganguly — he humbly requested that Thakur grace his newly constructed house and inaugurate it by performing the house-entry (Griha-pravesh) ceremony. The date was fixed as 21st Baisakh, i.e., 4th May 1927, on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya.

Despite earnest pleas from His family and even concerns over His life, all opposition crumbled before Thakur’s resolute determination. To answer a devotee’s call and fulfil Prafulla babu’s heartfelt wish, He resolved to go, disregarding extreme bodily fatigue and mental strain. In His characteristic simplicity, Thakur could at times be so firmly determined that no one could restrain Him. On 3rd May, He set off towards Howrah.

That very day, Thakur’s ardent devotee Sri Akshay Kumar Gupta arrived in Bankura with his wife, instead of Kolkata as initially planned. As they alighted at Bankura station around 11:30 AM, they heard that Thakur was travelling to Medinipur on the very train they had just disembarked from. Overjoyed, they hastily returned to the platform, met Thakur, and boarded the same train again.

Upon reaching Medinipur station, Thakur was taken to the residence of Sarada Prasanna Sen Mahashaya. There, extensive discussions took place about the upcoming festival in Medinipur. However, devotees anxiously noticed that Thakur barely ate during meals. His body was so frail that the usual joy seemed absent, causing deep concern among His followers.

The following day, 4th May, was the house-entry ceremony at “Harabas”. That very night, Thakur departed for Howrah by the 3 AM train. Devotees purchased second-class tickets for Him and inter-class tickets for themselves. Yet, Thakur firmly refused to travel comfortably alone — He insisted on travelling together with the devotees in inter-class. Unable to persuade Him otherwise, they purchased an inter-class ticket for Him as well and all boarded together. For Akshay Kumar Gupta and others, this was an unparalleled fortune — it was both the first and last opportunity to spend the night in the same coach with Thakur. Just to offer a little joy to His devotees, Thakur endured this discomfort and travelled inter-class. Previously, no one was allowed to sleep near Thakur, so none knew what He did at night or where He went. That night, being in His close proximity, the devotees experienced indescribable bliss. Lying on the bench, Thakur spoke to them in various ways and even rested a while, but due to overwhelming joy, none could sleep.

The next morning, on 4th May, they arrived in Howrah and all together reached Prafullababu’s new residence “Harabas”. On this divine morning, Thakur performed the house-entry ceremony there — it was His own wish. During the Radhanagar festival on Good Friday earlier that year (1927), Thakur Himself had told Prafullababu to hold the house-entry on Akshaya Tritiya. To fulfil Thakur’s command, Prafullababu had been rushing the renovation work at breakneck speed. Although much work still remained, making it nearly impossible to complete everything in time for the festival and house-entry, his engineer friends too had said, “Impossible!” Yet, relying fully on Thakur, Prafullababu did not lose hope.

Later, one night, he dreamt that Thakur Himself had arrived at “Harabas” with devotees, seated on an elevated seat, while Prafullababu sat joyfully at His feet as the house-entry ceremony and festival took place. This dream doubled his enthusiasm. And indeed, the same happened in reality — the renovation work finished, and on Akshaya Tritiya itself, the Lord arrived in person.

Soon after Thakur’s arrival in the morning, the venerable Sri Shishir Kumar Ghoshal and his wife came with garlands and flowers. Both of them assisted in the festival arrangements. Thakur refreshed Himself with a sacred bath in the holy waters of the Ganges.

That night, a grand feast of Mahaprasad was arranged. Although arrangements were made for about 130 guests, nearly 300 devotees and guests partook of the prasad that day. It was a miraculous pastime of Thakur’s grace — as if the storehouse contained inexhaustible prasad. Devotees like Basanta Kumar Ganguly, Ashu Bagchi, and many others spent the entire night immersed in heavenly bliss. Thakur’s beloved devotees Brajendranath Kundu and Basudev Mazumdar devoted themselves to His personal service and were blessed.

Thakur sat in an upstairs room of Harabas, surrounded by a few devotees. One devotee asked,
“In every spiritual practice, gradually the practitioner begins to realise whether his practice is progressing rightly or not. He perceives subtle powers awakening within him. For those practising name (nāma) repetition, is there any way to know whether the practice of taking the Name is going rightly?”

Thakur replied,
“What is right or wrong in chanting the Name? Take the Name however you can — with carelessness or with faith — just take it. One who continues chanting may not always perceive what is happening within, but he will know that his attachment to the Name is gradually increasing and he is finding sweetness in it. The initial mentality of ‘taking medicine forcibly’ fades away, and with time, a state comes where not chanting the Name causes discomfort. Whether or not he has his japa beads in hand, the Name continues to flow naturally with his breath and tongue. Let me tell you a way to know how far you are progressing in name practice — listen. As progress in the Name increases, so too will the bodily ego (‘mine-ness’ about the body) decrease. Do not worry about whether the Name is going rightly or not — the One whose Name it is will see to it. You simply keep chanting, just keep chanting.” (Haranath Smriti – 6)

On another day in that upstairs room, a devotee was narrating the faults and misdeeds of another absent devotee before Thakur. Hearing this criticism, Thakur intervened and gently warned,
“Do not slander anyone. It is a common law of nature that if you criticise someone’s actions, circumstances will one day compel you to do that very same thing.” (Haranath Smriti – 1)

About “Harabas”, Thakur told Ganguly Mahashaya,
“May this house be a place of constant service and a meeting ground for devotees.”
By Thakur’s blessing, this place attained such glory. From that time on, this house became known among the devotees of Kusum Haranath as a household ashram.

The next morning, on 5th May, as Akshay Kumar Gupta and his wife prepared to take leave, they bowed and touched Thakur’s feet. Thakur said to Akshay Kumar Gupta,
“Take my mother to Barishal and give her full rest.”
The previous day, Thakur had told him to get her treated, but that day He did not mention it again. Hearing this, Gupta was assured that there was no more danger to his wife’s life. However, he felt deeply pained and saddened seeing that Thakur Himself was suffering, as though He had drawn his wife’s illness upon Himself. The devotee’s heart became heavy, contemplating Thakur’s boundless compassion and self-sacrifice.

Just 21 days before His physical departure, this divine pastime of Thakur at Howrah for the inauguration of “Harabas” stands as a marvellous confluence of His love for devotees, self-sacrifice, divine powers, and guidance for the future. “Harabas” is not merely a house — it is a living monument of Sri Sri Kusum Haranath’s blessings. Entering this house, a devotee’s heart experiences a sublime peace and joy, as though Thakur Himself still dwells there eternally, showering His love and grace. This house remains a sacred refuge for devotees, a sanctified pilgrimage site blessed by His holy presence.

শুভ অক্ষয় তৃতীয়ার পুণ্যলগ্নে হাওড়ার “হরবাস” উদ্বোধন কাহিনী

ভক্তহৃদয়ের পরম ধন, পতিতপাবন শ্রীশ্রী হরনাথ তখন তাঁর ইহলীলার শেষ প্রান্তে উপনীত। সারা ভারতের ভক্তদের অক্লান্ত আহ্বানে সাড়া দিয়ে দীর্ঘ পর্যটন শেষে সবেমাত্র সোনামুখী ফিরেছেন। শরীর চরম ক্লান্ত, দেহ যেন আর সায় দিচ্ছে না। এমতাবস্থায়, হাওড়ার ভক্তপ্রবর শ্রী প্রফুল্ল কুমার গাঙ্গুলী মহাশয়ের পক্ষ থেকে এক আমন্ত্রণ এলো – তাঁর নবনির্মিত গৃহে ঠাকুরকে শুভাগমন করে গৃহপ্রবেশের অনুষ্ঠান সম্পন্ন করতে হবে। দিনটি ধার্য্য হয়েছিল ২১শে বৈশাখ, অর্থাৎ ১৯২৭ সালের ৪ঠা মে, শুভ অক্ষয় তৃতীয়া।

পরিবারের সকলের শত অনুনয়-বিনয়, এমনকি জীবন সংশয়ের আশঙ্কাও সেদিন ঠাকুরের সুদৃঢ় সংকল্পের সামনে হার মেনেছিল। ভক্তের আহ্বানে সাড়া দিতে, প্রফুল্লবাবুর একান্ত বাসনা পূর্ণ করতে শরীর ও মনের চরম ক্লান্তি উপেক্ষা করেও তিনি স্থির করলেন তিনি যাবেন। স্বভাবসিদ্ধ সরলতায় কখনও কখনও তিনি এতটাই দৃঢ়প্রতিজ্ঞ হয়ে উঠতেন যে, তাঁকে রোধ করার সাধ্য কারও ছিল না। ৩রা মে তিনি হাওড়ার উদ্দেশ্যে যাত্রা শুরু করলেন।

সেই দিনেই ঠাকুরের পরম ভক্ত অক্ষয়কুমার গুপ্ত মহাশয় স্ত্রীকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে বেনারস থেকে কলকাতার বদলে বাঁকুড়া এসে পৌঁছালেন। সকাল সাড়ে এগারোটায় যখন তাঁরা বাঁকুড়া স্টেশনে নামছেন, তখনই শুনতে পেলেন, যে ট্রেন থেকে তাঁরা নামলেন, সেই ট্রেনেই ঠাকুর মেদিনীপুর যাচ্ছেন! অত্যন্ত আনন্দিত হয়ে তাঁরা দ্রুত স্টেশনে ফিরে এলেন, ঠাকুরের দর্শন পেলেন এবং সেই ট্রেনেই উঠে পড়লেন।

মেদিনীপুর স্টেশনে পৌঁছে ঠাকুরকে সারদা প্রসন্ন সেন মহাশয়ের গৃহে নিয়ে যাওয়া হলো। সেখানে মেদিনীপুরের পরবর্তী উৎসব কিভাবে সম্পন্ন হবে তা নিয়ে তাঁর সঙ্গে বিস্তর আলোচনা হলো। কিন্তু ভক্তেরা চিন্তিত হয়ে লক্ষ্য করলেন যে, ভোজনের সময় ঠাকুর নামমাত্র আহার করছেন। তাঁর শরীর এতটাই অসুস্থ ছিল যে স্বাভাবিক আনন্দ সেখানে অনুপস্থিত ছিল। ভক্তদের মনে উদ্বেগ দেখা দিলো।

পরদিন, ৪ঠা মে, ছিল “হরবাস”এ গৃহপ্রবেশ অনুষ্ঠান। সেই রাতেই ঠাকুর হাওড়ার উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা দিলেন রাত ৩টের ট্রেনে। ভক্তরা ঠাকুরের জন্য দ্বিতীয় শ্রেণীতে এবং বাকিদের জন্য ইন্টার ক্লাসে যাওয়ার টিকিট কাটছিলেন। কিন্তু ভক্তদের ছেড়ে একাকী আরামদায়ক শ্রেণীতে যেতে তিনি কিছুতেই রাজি হলেন না। তিনি ইন্টার ক্লাসেই সকলের সঙ্গে যাবেন বলে জিদ ধরলেন। ভক্তেরা কোনভাবেই তাঁকে নিবৃত্ত করতে না পেরে বাধ্য হয়ে তাঁর জন্যও ইন্টার ক্লাসের টিকিট কাটলেন। সকলে মিলে ঠাকুরের সঙ্গে সেই ইন্টার ক্লাসের কামরায় উঠলেন। অক্ষয় কুমার গুপ্ত ও অন্যানদের জন্য এটি ছিল এক পরম সৌভাগ্য, ঠাকুরের সঙ্গে একই কামরায় শয়ন করার এটিই ছিল তাঁদের প্রথম ও শেষ সুযোগ। ভক্তদের সামান্য আনন্দ দেওয়ার জন্য ঠাকুর সেদিন এমন কষ্ট স্বীকার করে ইন্টার ক্লাসে ভ্রমণ করেছিলেন। এর আগে কাউকে ঠাকুরের কাছাকাছি শয়ন করতে দেওয়া হতো না, তাই রাতে ঠাকুর কি করতেন বা কোথায় যেতেন তা কেউ জানত না। সেদিন রাতে ঠাকুরের সঙ্গে একই কামরায় থাকতে পেরে ভক্তদের যে কী অপার আনন্দ হয়েছিল, তা ভাষায় প্রকাশ করা অসম্ভব! বেঞ্চে শুয়ে ঠাকুর তাঁদের সঙ্গে নানারকম কথা বলছিলেন এবং কিছুক্ষণ ঘুমিয়েও ছিলেন, কিন্তু ভক্তদের আনন্দের আতিশয্যে ঘুম আসছিল না।

পরদিন সকালে, ৪ঠা মে, হাওড়া পৌঁছে তাঁরা সকলে ঠাকুরকে নিয়ে প্রফুল্লবাবুর নতুন গৃহ “হরবাস”-এ উপস্থিত হলেন। এই দিব্য প্রভাতে ঠাকুর সেখানে গৃহপ্রবেশের অনুষ্ঠান সম্পন্ন করলেন। এটি ছিল ঠাকুরেরই ইচ্ছা। ১৯২৭ সালের গুড ফ্রাইডের দিন রাধানগরের উৎসবে ঠাকুর নিজেই প্রফুল্লবাবুকে অক্ষয় তৃতীয়াতে গৃহপ্রবেশ এর কথা বলেছিলেন। ঠাকুরের আদেশ পালন করতে প্রফুল্লবাবু প্রবল গতিতে গৃহ সংস্কারের কাজ চালাচ্ছিলেন। যদিও সেদিন এত কাজ বাকি ছিল যে অক্ষয় তৃতীয়ায় উৎসবের আয়োজন সহ গৃহের বাকী কাজ শেষ করা প্রায় অসম্ভব ছিল। তাঁর ইঞ্জিনিয়ার বন্ধুরাও কাজ দেখে বলেছিলেন, ‘অসম্ভব!’ কিন্তু প্রফুল্লবাবু ঠাকুরের উপর নির্ভর করে আশা হারাননি। এরপর একদিন রাতে তিনি স্বপ্নে দেখলেন যে, স্বয়ং ঠাকুর ভক্তদের সঙ্গে নিয়ে “হরবাস”-এ এসেছেন, তিনি ঠাকুরকে উঁচু আসনে বসিয়েছেন এবং নিজে আনন্দে তাঁর চরণতলে বসে আছেন, গৃহপ্রবেশের অনুষ্ঠান সম্পন্ন হচ্ছে এবং হরবাসে উৎসব চলছে। এই স্বপ্ন দেখে তাঁর উৎসাহ দ্বিগুণ হয়ে গেল। বাস্তবেও ঠিক তেমনই হলো – গৃহ সংস্কারের কাজ শেষ হলো এবং ঠিক অক্ষয় তৃতীয়ার দিনে স্বয়ং প্রভু এসে উপস্থিত হলেন।

সকালে ঠাকুর আসার পরপরই পরম শ্রদ্ধেয় শ্রী শিশির কুমার ঘোষাল মহাশয় স্ত্রী সহ মাল্য ও পুষ্প নিয়ে এলেন। তাঁরা দুজনেই উৎসবের কাজে সাহায্য করলেন। ঠাকুর শরীরকে সতেজ করে জাহ্নবীর পুণ্য সলিলে স্নান করলেন।

রাতে মহাপ্রসাদের আয়োজন করা হয়েছিল। ১৩০ জনের মতো অতিথির ব্যবস্থা থাকলেও সেদিন প্রায় ৩০০ জন ভক্ত ও অতিথি প্রসাদ গ্রহণ করেন। এ ছিল ঠাকুরের কৃপার এক অলৌকিক লীলা, যেন ভান্ডারে অক্ষয় প্রসাদ ছিল। বসন্ত কুমার গাঙ্গুলী, আশু বাগচী ও আরও অনেক ভক্ত সারারাত এক স্বর্গীয় আনন্দে মেতে কাটালেন। ঠাকুরের পরম ভক্ত ব্রজেন্দ্রনাথ কুন্ডু ও বাসুদেব মজুমদার ঠাকুরের ব্যক্তিগত সেবায় নিজেদের নিয়োজিত করে ধন্য হয়েছিলেন।

হরবাসের দ্বিতলের একটি কক্ষে ঠাকুর উপবিষ্ট ছিলেন। সেখানে কয়েকজন ভক্ত তাঁর সান্নিধ্যে ছিলেন। একজন ভক্ত জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “সকল সাধনাতেই সাধক ক্ৰমে বুঝিতে পারেন তাঁহার সাধনা হইতেছে কিনা। ক্রমে ক্রমে তাঁহাদের সূক্ষ্ম শক্তির স্ফুরণ হইতেছে তাহা জানিতে পারেন। যাহারা নাম-সাধন করিতেছেন তাঁহাদের নাম করা ঠিকমত হইতেছে কি না তাহা জানিবার কোনই উপায় নাই কি?” ঠাকুর উত্তরে এইভাবে বলিলেন, “নাম করা আবার ঠিক মত বা বেঠিক মত কি? হেলায় শ্রদ্ধায় নাম করিলেই হইল। যে নাম লইয়া থাকে সে নিজের ভিতর কি পরিবর্তন হইতেছে তাহা সকল সময় বুঝিতে পারে না; তবে এই বুঝিতে পারে যে, নামে ক্রমেই রুচি হইতেছে এবং মিষ্টতা পাইতেছে। প্রথম প্রথম যে “ঔষধ গেলা” ভাব থাকে সেটা কাটিয়া গিয়া ক্রমে এমন হয় যে নাম করিতে না পারিলে বড়ই অস্বস্তি অনুভব করে। মালা পাউক বা না পাউক, তাহার রসনায় – নিশ্বাসে – নাম চলিতে থাকে। নাম সাধনায় কে কেমন অগ্রসর হইতেছে তাহা জানিবার একটা উপায় তোমাদের বলিতেছি শুনিয়া রাখ, যে যত অগ্রসর হইবে তাহার শরীরে অভিমান তত লোপ পাইবে। নাম করা হইতেছে, কি না হইতেছে ভাবিও না; যাঁহার নাম তিনিই দেখিবেন ; তোমরা কেবল নাম কর! -নাম কর!!” (হরনাথ স্মৃতি – ৬)

অন্য একদিন দ্বিতলের সেই কক্ষে ঠাকুরের সামনে বসে একজন ভক্ত অনুপস্থিত অপর এক ভক্তের আচার-আচরণের সমালোচনা করে তার চরিত্রের বিচ্যুতিগুলো বর্ণনা করছিলেন। এই সমালোচনা শুনে ঠাকুর বাধা দিয়ে কেবল সতর্ক করে বললেন, “কাহারও নিন্দা করিও না। প্রকৃতির রাজ্যে এই এক নিয়ম যে কাহারও কোন কাৰ্য্যের নিন্দা করিলে তোমাকেই কোন এক সময়ে ঘটনাচক্রে পড়িয়া ঠিক সেইরূপ কাৰ্য্যই করিতে হইবে।” (হরনাথ স্মৃতি – ১)

“হরবাস” সম্বন্ধে ঠাকুর গাঙ্গুলী মহাশয়কে বলেছিলেন, “তোমার এই গৃহ যেন নিত্যসেবা ও ভক্তদের মিলনক্ষেত্র হয়।” ঠাকুরের এই আশীর্বাদেই সেই স্থানটি সেই মহিমা লাভ করেছিল। সেই সময় থেকেই এই গৃহটি কুসুমহরনাথ ভক্ত সমাজে গার্হস্থ্য আশ্রম রূপে পরিচিতি লাভ করে।

পরদিন সকালে, ৫ই মে, অক্ষয় কুমার গুপ্ত ও তাঁর স্ত্রী বিদায় নেওয়ার সময় ঠাকুরের পায়ে হাত দিয়ে প্রণাম করতে গেলেন। ঠাকুর অক্ষয় কুমার গুপ্তকে বললেন, “আমার মাকে বরিশাল নিয়ে যাও এবং তাকে পূর্ণ বিশ্রাম দাও।” আগের দিন ঠাকুর তাকে চিকিৎসা করানোর কথা বললেও সেদিন তিনি আর সে কথা বললেন না। এই কথা শুনে গুপ্ত নিশ্চিত হলেন যে তাঁর স্ত্রীর জীবন নিয়ে আর কোনো ভয় নেই। কিন্তু তিনি অত্যন্ত ব্যথিত ও দুঃখিত হয়েছিলেন এটা দেখে যে, ঠাকুর নিজেই কষ্ট পাচ্ছেন, যেন তাঁর স্ত্রীর রোগ নিজের উপর টেনে নিয়েছেন। ঠাকুরের এই অপার করুণা ও আত্মত্যাগের কথা ভেবে ভক্তের হৃদয় ভারাক্রান্ত হয়ে উঠল।

দেহত্যাগের মাত্র ২১ দিন পূর্বে “হরবাস” উদ্বোধন উপলক্ষ্যে ঠাকুরের এই হাওড়া লীলা তাঁর ভক্তপ্রেম, আত্মত্যাগ, দৈবশক্তি এবং ভবিষ্যতের পথনির্দেশনার এক অপূর্ব সমন্বয়। “হরবাস” আজ শুধু একটি গৃহ নয়, এটি শ্রীশ্রী কুসুমহরনাথের আশীর্বাদের এক জীবন্ত স্মারক, যেখানে প্রবেশ করলে ভক্তহৃদয় এক দিব্য শান্তি ও আনন্দ অনুভব করে, যেন স্বয়ং ঠাকুর আজও সেখানেই নিত্য বিরাজ করছেন তাঁর প্রেম ও কৃপাধারা নিয়ে। এই গৃহ ভক্তদের কাছে এক পবিত্র আশ্রয়, তাঁর চরণস্পর্শে ধন্য এক চিরন্তন তীর্থক্ষেত্র।
