Haranath: The Fearless Boy’s Encounter with a Tiger

Born in 1865 in Sonamukhi, Bankura, Thakur Haranath’s childhood was marked by incidents that hinted at his extraordinary personality. One such thrilling tale from his early youth vividly illustrates his innate fearlessness.

Haranath’s initial schooling took place at the village pathshala. After four years there, he enrolled in the Middle English (M.E.) School in Sonamukhi in 1874. This was a larger institution for its time, where English was taught up to the lower secondary level. Haranath was just settling into his new environment when a frightening incident unfolded, beginning a new chapter in his life: an unexpected encounter with a tiger.

That morning started like any other ordinary day. Some teachers and students from Sonamukhi M.E. School decided to visit Dhansimla, a village about four miles away. There, a lively fair with cock-fighting, wrestling, and other rural games was taking place. Haranath was part of this student group, accompanied by his pathshala friends, Ram Sadai Banerjee, Rasiklal De, and Kedarnath De. Their journey to Dhansimla was filled with the joyous anticipation of the festivities, passing without any incident.

However, the return journey was an entirely different story. As the day waned and the sun began to dip towards the western horizon, they had covered about half the distance back to Sonamukhi. Suddenly, they spotted a man running frantically towards them from the opposite direction. The man’s face was etched with fear. Upon reaching them, he breathlessly warned them not to proceed further, for a tiger was lurking by the side of the unmetalled road they were on.

At first, they found it hard to believe him. Perhaps it was just a rumor! So, they cautiously advanced a few more paces. But in the very next moment, a horrifying sight unfolded before their eyes. Tucked away by the roadside, behind a thicket, sat a massive tiger! In front of it lay a dead cow, and the tiger was calmly drinking its blood. The scene sent shivers down everyone’s spines.

Sensing human presence, the tiger slowly lifted its head. Its predatory eyes fixed directly on them. Standing before that fierce gaze, a chilling wave of fear instantly swept through the students and teachers alike. At the sight of the tiger, everyone except Haranath turned and fled for their lives! Each one ran desperately, seeking an escape.

But Haranath? He was an exception. There wasn’t a trace of fear on his face. He stood unwavering before the colossal tiger, not moving an inch. In his hand was a closed umbrella. Driven by some instinct, he wondered what would happen if he opened it. He acted on the thought. As he unfurled the umbrella, the tiger, having likely never seen such a thing before, paused for a moment, bewildered by the sudden sight of a large object expanding before its eyes. And then what happened? The tiger was startled! Yes, faced with a mere umbrella, it was taken aback. In a swift movement, it turned and bolted into the depths of the jungle, vanishing in the blink of an eye.

Watching the entire scene unfold from a distance, the stunned teachers and students finally breathed a sigh of relief. Overcoming their fear, they slowly made their way back to the spot and continued their journey home safely, without any further trouble.

This incident quickly spread beyond Sonamukhi, reaching the ears of many. Haranath’s courage and quick thinking in this encounter became one of the most memorable chapters of his boyhood. ১৮৬৫ সালের এক শুভক্ষণে বাঁকুড়া জেলার সোনামুখীর মাটিতে চোখ মেলেছিলেন ঠাকুর হরনাথ। তাঁর শৈশব থেকেই কিছু বিশেষ ঘটনা বারবার বুঝিয়ে দিত যে, তিনি সাধারণদের থেকে আলাদা, তিনি এক অসাধারণ ব্যক্তিত্বের অধিকারী। এমনই এক শ্বাসরুদ্ধকর ঘটনা তাঁর কৈশোরে ঘটেছিল, যা আজও তাঁর নির্ভীকতার প্রমাণ বহন করে।

সেদিনের সকালটা ছিল আর পাঁচটা সাধারণ দিনের মতোই। সোনামুখী এম.ই. স্কুলের কয়েকজন শিক্ষক ও ছাত্র মিলে ঠিক করলেন, তাঁরা ধানসিমলা যাবেন। সোনামুখী থেকে প্রায় চার মাইল দূরের সেই গ্রামে মোরগ লড়াই, কুস্তি এবং আরও নানা ধরনের গ্রামীণ খেলাধুলার আসর বসেছিল। হরনাথ সেই ছাত্রদলের একজন। তাঁর প্রিয় পাঠশালার বন্ধু রামসদয় ব্যানার্জি, রসিকলাল দে এবং কেদারনাথ দে-ও তাঁর সঙ্গী হয়েছিলেন। সকলের মনে তখন উৎসবের আমেজ, হৈ-হুল্লোড় করতে করতে তাঁদের পথ কেটে যাচ্ছিল। যাওয়ার পথে কোনো বিপদের ছায়া তাঁদের স্পর্শ করেনি।

কিন্তু ফিরতি পথের চিত্রটা ছিল সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন। বেলা গড়িয়েছে, সূর্য পশ্চিম আকাশে ঢলে পড়েছে। যখন তাঁরা সোনামুখীর প্রায় অর্ধেক পথ পেরিয়ে এসেছেন, তখনই এক অপ্রত্যাশিত ঘটনার সম্মুখীন হলেন। হঠাৎ তাঁরা দেখলেন, উল্টো দিক থেকে একজন লোক প্রাণপণে দৌড়ে তাঁদের দিকেই আসছে। লোকটির চোখে-মুখে স্পষ্ট ভয়ের ছাপ। কাছে এসে সে হাঁপাতে হাঁপাতে জানাল, সামনে না এগোতে, কারণ তাঁরা যে কাঁচা রাস্তা ধরে ফিরছিলেন, তার পাশেই নাকি একটি বাঘ লুকিয়ে আছে।

প্রথমটায় সবাই লোকটির কথা বিশ্বাস করতে পারছিলেন না। হয়তো নিছকই গুজব! তাই তাঁরা আরও কয়েক পা এগিয়ে গেলেন। কিন্তু পরের মুহূর্তেই এক বীভৎস দৃশ্য তাঁদের চোখের সামনে ফুটে উঠল। রাস্তার পাশেই, ঝোপের আড়ালে, একটি বিশাল বাঘ বসে আছে! তার সামনেই পড়ে আছে একটি মৃত গরু। বাঘটি পরম আরামে সেই গরুর রক্ত পান করছিল। সেদিনের সেই দৃশ্য সবার শিরদাঁড়া দিয়ে এক ঠান্ডা স্রোত বইয়ে দিল।

মানুষের উপস্থিতি টের পেয়ে বাঘটি ধীরে ধীরে মাথা তুলে দাঁড়াল। তার শিকারি চোখগুলো সরাসরি তাদের দিকে তাকাল। সেই হিংস্র দৃষ্টির সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে ছাত্র ও শিক্ষকদের মধ্যে নিমেষেই ভয়ের হিমশীতল স্রোত বইতে শুরু করল। বাঘটিকে দেখামাত্রই হরনাথ ছাড়া বাকি সব ছাত্র এবং শিক্ষকরা প্রাণপণে দৌড় লাগালেন! যে যার মতো করে বাঁচার জন্য ছুটে পালালেন।

কিন্তু হরনাথ! তিনি ছিলেন ব্যতিক্রম। তাঁর মধ্যে ভয়ের বিন্দুমাত্র চিহ্নও ছিল না। সেই বিশাল বাঘের সামনে তিনি অবিচলভাবে দাঁড়িয়ে রইলেন, এক ইঞ্চিও নড়লেন না। তাঁর হাতে ছিল একটি বন্ধ ছাতা। কী এক দৈব প্রভাবে তাঁর মনে হলো, ছাতাটি খুলে ফেললে কেমন হয়! ভাবনা অনুযায়ী কাজ করলেন তিনি। যেই তিনি ছাতাটি খুললেন, বাঘটি সম্ভবত এমন কিছু আগে কখনো দেখেনি। বিশাল আকারের একটা জিনিস হঠাৎ করে তাঁর চোখের সামনে খুলে যেতে দেখে সে এক মুহূর্তের জন্য থমকে গেল। তারপর কী হলো? বাঘটি ভয় পেয়ে গেল! হ্যাঁ, তার আকারের তুলনায় একটি সামান্য ছাতার সামনে সে কিংকর্তব্যবিমূঢ় হয়ে পড়ল। এক ঝটকায় সে ঘুরেই পড়ি কি মরি করে জঙ্গলের গভীরে পালিয়ে গেল, চোখের পলকে অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেল।

দূরে দাঁড়িয়ে এই পুরো দৃশ্যটা দেখছিলেন হতভম্ব শিক্ষক ও ছাত্ররা। বাঘের পালানো দেখে তাঁরা যেন হাঁফ ছেড়ে বাঁচলেন। ভয় কাটিয়ে ধীরে ধীরে তাঁরা আবার সেই জায়গায় ফিরে এলেন এবং কোনো রকম ঝামেলা ছাড়াই নিরাপদে বাড়ি ফিরলেন।

এই ঘটনাটি সোনামুখী ছাড়িয়ে দূরে বহু মানুষের কানে পৌঁছেছিল। হরনাথের নির্ভীকতা এবং উপস্থিত বুদ্ধির এই গল্প তাঁর বাল্যকালের অন্যতম স্মরণীয় অধ্যায় হয়ে রইল। এই ঘটনাই প্রমাণ করে, হরনাথ সাধারণ বালক ছিলেন না, তিনি ছিলেন জন্মগতভাবেই একজন বীর, যার মধ্যে লুকিয়ে ছিল অসাধারণ সাহস আর এক অদ্ভুত মানসিক জোর।
