Letter No. 5

To, Rajani Kanta Ghosh:

However brilliant a student may be, he cannot but feel unnerved by the fear of examinations. Even so, however greata sage may be and however deserving of the grace of God, he cannot but be flurried and frightened now and then when he comes to this place of examination (the earth). The troubles you have to occasionally face in the course of your life are surely based on the same principle, being nothing more than a test of fitness. Therefore you should not give way to despair. Lord has sent all to this school of the universe for learning their duties. If they pass, He will allot them suitable posts and make them His personal retinue. He will not admit those who fail into the circle of His intimate companions but are sent from one school to another school, i.e. repeated births. It is very likely that this idea is the foundation for “The theory of evolution.” Human life is compared to entrance examination; other forms of life to college education. None are near the Lord’s abode. Only in human stage, we have opportunity to choose our future. That is why the Scriptures have described human life as a rare privilege. Gods are servants; and denizens of hell are prisoners; they are not free agents.

Having gained this precious human life, make proper use of it. It is not possible to say that another such favourable opportunity would recur. Those, who having gained life do not say Krishna or Hari, have undoubtedly deluded themselves. With body, mind and soul we should rely on the Name of Hari. Name will confer limitless joy and no punishment in the world can then frighten us.
