Thakur Haranath and Chittaranjan Das

Conversation Between Thakur Haranath and Chittaranjan Das

Meeting with Chittaranjan Das : From Bombay Thakur came to Nagpur. From there He started for Calcutta by Bombay Mail. By that time Chittaranjan Das Mahashaya also was coming to Calcutta. That time the Congress Session was at Nagpur; C.R. Das Mahashaya came to the Congress. At Raipur station he boarded that second class compartment in which Thakur was. For a long time there was no conversation between the two. After that when the train came to Bilaspur station, Manindranath Mukhopadhyaya and some other devotees got up into His compartment with some light refreshments to make Thakur have tiffin (Jal Yoga).

Then Chittaranjan Das Mahasaya asked Thakur, “Why does not the religious sentiment that you preach spread everywhere? On the other hand, about this political affairs in how short a time a hue and cry has been raised everywhere! What is the meaning of this?” Haranath replied, “You have seen vegetable markets and fish markets. Their goods – how many rupees worth or their capital how many rupees? But how much hue and cry, push and pull there! On the other hand, in a shop of diamonds and jewels how much more capital, how much goods worth many more rupees, yet how far less the noise there! Customers come by motor cars, give lacs of rupees and taking the gems silently go away. Does it mean that the greater the hue and cry the greater the work is?”
