Letter No. 6
To, Hema Chandra Ghosh and his wife:
World is for two days, and its pleasures and pains are fleeting. Therefore under the influence of such pleasures, do not forget Krishna the everlasting friend, kinsmen and life of lives. Leaving Krishna, if you choose to love any one, he is sure to inflict pain on you. How many times have we had such dear relations as mother, father, son, daughter, wife and husband, and how deeply have we loved them, only to be deceived. We have forgotten them and they have also forgotten us. Like me, every one else, falling into the gloom of worldliness, is like a sinking man alternately dipping and raising his head out of water; he thinks that he is relieved for ever when he takes a breath, but the next moment loses consciousness, sinking deeper under water. ‘There is hardly another such bewildering spectacle. Today the harrowing idea of expected loss of a dear one, is throwing me into utter despair; losing him, to morrow I am transferring my affections to some other object equally transitory. O Lord, great indeed is your sport! It has neither beginning nor end, is moving on uniformly for ever, never goes out of line, and no human effort can make it swerve. Lord, once take me down from this wonderful swing.
Sister, nothing of this world is permanent, everything is given by the Lord and taken by the Lord. There is nothing that we can call our own. Even this material body is His and taken away by Him at His pleasure. May Krishna sit in our hearts and make us remember this. Man cannot see Him but he has His name. May we ever make that our shelter with body, mind and word. Then He Himself will become our own. The beasts and birds of Braja are seeing Him and playing with Him. Leaving Name whatever you approach, will repulse you as a stranger. One who has never heard of a diamond, will throw it away, even if it falls into his hands. But he who has heard of the gem will start picking up even bits of glass mistaking them for diamonds and perchance picks up the actual gem in these attempts. Go on telling “Krishna, Krishna,” and catch this and that as Krishna; some day the wolf will appear in the flock. You will find Krishna and all your desires will be gratified.
