Part 2; Letter No. 5

Letter No. 5

To, Hema Chandra Ghosh and his wife:

Notwithstanding your domestic responsibilities, never forget to recount Krishna’s name. There is no other priceless gem than Name; it is Prema’s father, mother, begetter and producer. From Name comes Prema and from Prema you can obtain Prema’s youth, Krishna. No austerity is greater than Name. All sorts of troubles end by taking Name. Things of the world are short-lived and those that love such things will stand deceived. Some are deceived by loving children and some loving husbands or wives or several others. Sister, if you want to love with all your heart, without being deceived, then love the ever-present Krishna, regarding Him, as the life of lives and you will never have to weep. If we get lost, He will find us out. If we forget, He will remind us. If we weep, He will wipe our eyes. If we smile, He will enhance our joy. If you want to call any one mother, father, brother, friend, son or daughter, call Him as such. Forgetting Him the kingdom of heaven would be worse than the dreadful hell. With Him in heart, the infinite pleasures of Vaikunta could be enjoyed even in hell. Oh merciful Krishna! teach me to love. You have given and are still giving me every thing I require. Would that I may not fall into error by asking for things you have given me unsolicited. I do not know what priceless gems you have with you. Because I do not know how to ask for, do not conclude that I have no wants. Understanding my wants yourself kindly supply them.

Sister, for two days connections of the world, do not forget the everlasting companion. We have formed these temporary connections many a time. Mothers, fathers, friends, wives, husbands, we have had without number birth after birth. And we do not remember them, nor do they remember us, but Krishna has never lost sight of us in all births. Supplying our wants in time, He has ever saved us. Proclaim to all that nothing is of avail without Krishna, and that if they want Him, they must take His name. His name is far valuable than He Himself, for He can grant only liberation, whereas His name can bring Him within reach. There is nothing more expedient than Name.

Lay your burden of miseries and sins on my head and roll in Krishna’s love. Let me witness this and rejoice. I do not for a moment think of my own self. I have no dread of hell. You will playfully and smilingly join Krishna; I will see this from a distance, that is all.
