Letter No. 4
To, Hema Chandra Ghosh:
Never forget Name. There is no second expedient other than Name. To the sinner, Krishna’s Name is far more dear than Krishna, for Krishna never approaches the sinner, but the sinner is at liberty to resort to Name by which he can reach Krishna. Hence Name is more endeared than Krishna Himself. With regard to Krishna, consideration of good and bad, place and condition arises, but with regard to Name, such a consideration does not arise. Take Name while eating or at rest or in any condition or time or place without consideration of holiness or unholiness. Name is ever holy. At intervals seek solitude for chanting Name loudly and Prema will fill your body and flow through your eyes; then all troubles and pain cease.
Krishna’s name alone can offer Krishna Prema. It is doubtful whether Krishna Himself is capable of granting it. Hence Krishna’s Name is superior to Krishna Himself. It is far dearer to the sinner. With Lord’s name one can remain free from the fear of vice and virtue and from the three troubles of life (Aadhyatmic, Aadhideivic and Aadhibhoutic). Krishna Himself would not have been able to do anything for the great sinner Ajamil but by unconsciously uttering His name, he became most holy and devoid of fear. There is not a second great expedient like the Lord’s name. Let us leave the question of whether we are taking it properly or not to Him whose Name it is, and proceed. Let us not do it with the motive of gain, then there will be no disappointment. Never ask for small alms from the sovereign of sovereigns.
