Letter No. 1
To, Purna Chandra Chatterjee:
Repentance is the true atonement for bad deeds done; it should however be remembered that repentance for a second time after the first is not possible, the action then gets into a habit and hence it is necessary to give up for ever the deed along with repentance. In evil company men may have often to commit wrongs, though against their will; hence you shall have to shun such company once for all. Always desire for good company and Krishna will gratify your desire.
Know it for certain that the gain, which is dear even in Krishna’s company, is very cheap in the company of Sadhus. It is Krishna who has bestowed this honour upon them. The Sadhus have resigned everything to the feet of Krishna; hence it is that Krishna also has enhanced their honour accordingly. Hence make the association and service of Sadhus the principal aim of your life. If you have no money to spare, try to do good to others with your body and sweet words as far as practicable. Never think of causing pain to any one. Try to shake off evil thoughts. They are mightier than evil deeds. Raja Yoga is therefore more praiseworthy than Hata Yoga. One is thought, and the other is deed. Thought is so powerful that it can create non-existent things and can catch that which cannot be caught. Hence polish your thoughts well and you will be gratified.
Parents should be worshiped as God incarnate, then mercy of All-merciful Hari can be attained. How can he who fails to take care of his parents, possibly serve God with parental attitude. Charity begins at home. To serve your parents is your first lesson. If you neglect your first lesson, passing the final examination would become difficult. If one wishes to see the gods in flesh and blood, let him look at his parents. Unless one passes his Entrance examination by serving his parents, his desire to graduate from college is a mad man’s whim.
As parents are objects of worship;, so wife is the object of love and affection. Do not suppose wife to be a mere playmate. She is called Shakti (force) because in many things we need strength from her. She is called Sahadharmini because she assists in the discharge of religious duties. She is called Jaya because she holds the successor in the womb. Hence it is that wife is the chief helpmate in every state of life, in religion, wealth, desire, liberation. She can lead us to hell and also to liberation. Hence we ought not to cherish the idea of showing disrespect to her. Show due respect to every woman. Like state officers, they are performing their respective missions, leading the persons who wish to slide down to hell, in the guise of loose women, Rakshashis or Pisachis. Again it is they who sustain us with their own blood and lead us to the path of liberation. Hence never show disrespect to wife, whatever she might be. It is the women who stand at the entrance and exit to conduct us to our desired destination. Never try to beat them in any game.
Do not forget at rest or in sleep, the ever-holy Mantra , Krishna’s Name that has no parallel, without deliberating about cleanliness.
